DIY charm hoop earrings: how to make your own at home

Charms have taken over our bags, shoes, necklaces, earrings and even plants. I've hosted community charm events as well as private influencer and employee charm bar activations. While Yam continues to do hosted charm activations for brands and private clients ( click here) and you can find our hoops for sale at Berriez and the Whitney Musuem, I'm always down to share a good DIY. If you’re looking for how to make charm hoop earrings or DIY charm jewelry at home, here’s a simple way to get started.

Supplies needed so you can create your own DIY charm hoops at home.

Jump rings

Jump rings attach the charm to the hoop and can be opened and closed with flat nose pliers. I recommend 5mm Beadnova jump rings in silver and gold.

Hoops

Search for "blank hoop with loops" and Google will populate with a number of options.

Charms

While searching "charms" is the first natural instinct and will result in listings, I would also search "charm lot" , "bead de-stash" and "bead lot" on Google. These searches will result in charms with built-in loops and beads that will require headpins.

Headpins
Headpins

Headpins (optional)

Headpins are metal sticks to create your charm from beads. Slip a bead or beads onto a headpin and secure with a loop using your round nose pliers.

My recommendation for headpins is 22 gauge wire and 40mm long. This thickness gives durability while still allowing beads with smaller holes. If you want to bypass this step, purchase charms with a loop already attached.

Pliers (round and flat noise):

Round nose pliers are used to create a loop on a headpin. If you are not using headpins, you do not need to buy round nose pliers.

Flat nose pliers are used to open both the loop on a headpin and jump rings. I recommend having two sets of flat nose pliers. For brands, Beadsmith is budget friendly starter brand that I still use in my studio

Cutters (optional)

Cutters are only needed if you are using headpins. Cutters will cut off excess wire from your headpin before making a loop. I would recommend this pair from Beadsmith but any brand will also work.
